About GCCI

Mission

The Gilpin County Citizens Initiative (GCCI) is dedicated to facilitating and coordinating citizen action in Gilpin County to assist with wildfire prevention and helping to promote forest health issues on private and public land.

Goals

  1. Create and maintain a network of citizens in the county who are concerned about forest health and wildfire prevention issues.
  2. Organize spring beetle control activities (spraying and pheromone pouch purchases).
  3. Maintain a state of the art website to take citizen orders for prevention products and take citizen requests for help with forest related issues.  The clearing house software will match a citizen request with available professional or volunteer options.
  4. Provide referral information on vendors in the area and information on how citizens are affected by new governmental rules and regulations.
  5. Organize volunteer operations to help private property owners treat infected trees on their property.
  6. Organize volunteer operations to work with government agencies to treat infected trees on public property and road right of ways.
  7. Work with private and public entities to promote a comprehensive approach to forest management and wildfire prevention.
  8. Create a wood bank from harvested beetle killed wood to help low income local citizens with their winter heating needs.
  9. Use the Citizens Initiative to apply for and administer grants relating to forest management and wildfire prevention issues.
  10. Setup funding for green scholarships for local students to pursue careers in forestry or environmental engineering.
